best crash diets 2015, rapid weight loss touted as unsustainable. this must mean that slow and steady weightloss is better than losing weight rapidly. is this myth or medicine? dr. stephen cook: "slow and steady weightloss is better than losing weight rapidly."
that is both myth and medicine, and i'm goingto tell you why. i'm dr. stephen cook, associate professor of pediatricsin the center for community health at the golisano children's hospital at the universityof rochester medical center. if you have bariatric surgery, you're goingto lose weight rapidly because of the part of the intestine and stomach that's altered,as well as hormones that the body secretes that change really rapidly. but if you're on a traditional lifestyle approachof trying to lose weight through exercise, healthy eating, and monitoring what it isyou're doing and how busy you are, you're
going to lose weight slowly. what's really important, and especially ifyou lose weight rapidly, is that the body's desire to hold on to calories gets even stronger, and so it's harder to maintain weight loss with just the same first steps you try whenyou gradually lose weight. what that really means is, it takes you acertain amount of effort to lose the weight, but it takes you just as much, and maybe alittle more, to maintain that amount of weight loss, because of how your body's metabolismalters. narrator: will eating after 8:00 p.m. cause weight gain?
dr. stephen cook: one of the really importantthings with eating at night is understanding that your body's metabolism is still orientedfor you to be awake during the day and sleep at night. and that cycle is very important to maintainbeing awake and being alert, and part of the compensation of when you're tired is cravingsto eat. your body perceives that as a way to get energyand stay awake, and while it gives a short burst, it really doesn't maintain anything, and the problem is that now you've consumed extra calories that you're probably not movingenough to burn. and that's medicine.
